What is AI search visibility?
Last updated: September 2026
Why it matters now
Search behavior is splitting. A growing share of questions are answered inside an AI chat that summarizes sources instead of showing ten blue links. When the answer names three tools and yours is not one of them, you never existed for that user — no matter how well you rank on Google. Traditional SEO tools cannot see this at all: they track positions on a results page that the user may never visit.
AEO vs SEO: the real difference
- SEO optimizes for ranked link lists. Success = clicks from a results page.
- AEO/GEO optimizes for being named inside a generated answer. Success = being cited as the answer, often with zero clicks.
- The inputs overlap — clear, factual, well-structured content helps both — but the measurement is completely different: positions vs. mention and citation rates across repeated AI runs.
How AI search visibility is measured
You cannot "rank #3" in an AI answer, because answers are generated fresh each time and vary between runs. Honest measurement therefore repeats the work:
- Define the prompts your buyers actually ask (e.g. "best invoice tool for freelancers").
- Run each prompt through each engine multiple independent times — Quotalis uses 3 runs per prompt × engine cell via model APIs (official provider APIs or a disclosed third-party gateway).
- Count mentions (your brand named) and citations (your domain linked as a source).
- Report the mean with a min–max range, never a single bare score — one run proves nothing.
One caveat we publish openly: measurement through model APIs does not necessarily match what consumers see in the ChatGPT or Claude apps. Treat it as a consistent, comparable signal.
What improves it
The same things that make a site quotable: an llms.txt file, AI crawler permissions in robots.txt, structured data, and concise factual content that an LLM can lift verbatim. The full checklist is in how to get cited by AI answers.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Google still drives the majority of web traffic. AEO covers the growing slice of discovery that happens inside AI answers. Most teams need both, measured separately.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
Mostly terminology. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) describe the same goal: visibility inside AI-generated answers. Vendors picked different acronyms; the measurement is identical.
Can I track this with Google Search Console?
No. Search Console only sees Google search traffic. AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity are invisible to it — which is why dedicated measurement exists.
